Charity Ball - The Old Swan, Harrogate

The Old SwanA glittering event giving guests the chance to rub shoulders with some of rugby’s biggest names, Swing Low Sweet Charity’s Gala Ball nevertheless has our charities, Ataxia UK and Reach, at its heart.

Your host for the evening is Scotland and British Lions legend Doddie Weir.

Second-row giant Weir won 61 caps for Scotland and also formed part of the now fabled Lions tour to South Africa in 1997. He retired from playing in 2004, and his long-held reputation as a jocular gentleman of the game has since resulted in there being a great demand for his services as an after-dinner speaker and celebrity host.

Swing Low Sweet Charity organiser Ralph Zoing said: “It’s a great coup for Swing Low and its charities to be able to announce Doddie as the host for the evening event.

Doddie was an outstanding player and a larger than life character in more ways than one, and our guests can be sure of a great night with him at the helm.”

Entertainment comes from That Funky Band

The cost of a ticket includes a sumptuous 4-course meal, wine, entertainment and the opportunity to go away with some of the truly spectacular prizes you can bid for in our charity auction.

A grand venue in itself purposefully set-up to host and cater for glamorous events of this nature, The Old Swan also played a part in one of the biggest and most unusual scandals of the 1920s, when Agatha Christie secretively escaped there after the breakdown of her marriage. The hotel is therefore an absolute magnet for crime novel enthusiasts, and thus acts as a key hub during Harrogate’s world famous Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, held each year.
